Individual Therapy in Bellingham, WA

What I Provide

I offer one-on-one, in-person, psychotherapy for adults who are experiencing grief, loneliness, overwhelm, relationship difficulties, weariness, or a general “unsatisfactoriness” that's hard to name. Simple, straight-line, easily-intelligible prescriptions rarely resolve a troublesome situation. In the midst of difficulties, embodied contact with memories, fears, worries, and intuitions is often far more helpful. I facilitate this embodied contact by providing attention, spaciousness, time, and relationship. You might have something specific in mind when you first come in. You might only have a sense that something is “off”. Whatever you come in with, we will attend, together, to what's present in the room during the session.

My work is relational and present-centered. I don't see my job as correcting how you think or managing what you do. I see it as being fully present with you in a steady, reliable relationship with clear boundaries—attentive, curious, and honest—so that something now invisible can come into view. Change often comes along the way, but the real work is simple: speaking truthfully in relationship and attending to whatever shows up.

I draw most on psychodynamic, existential, and humanistic traditions, and on many years of Zen practice. I ask of my clients consistency, timeliness, and engagement—a few of the same things I try to bring myself.

I don’t work with all diagnoses or issues. Some examples of presenting issues outside of my scope are acute suicidality, acute substance use issues, schizophrenia, and eating disorders.

About

I became a therapist in midlife, after education in applied math and engineering, and professional experience as an engineer, a teacher, and as a government analyst. I lived a Buddhist monasteries for several years. Through my own experience as a client in Jungian analysis, I have found new meaning, connection, peace, and vitality. My path was unique to me: yours will be unique to you. My role is to reflect what you bring into the room with integrity and care. I don’t fix: I explore.

I prefer looking at what things are instead of fitting them into the neatest box. I don’t rush to diagnosis or force simple-sounding solutions. Instead, I offer time, attention, and space to let what’s unspoken surface on its own terms.
