Individual Therapy in Bellingham, WA

Marketing’s not my strength, but listening is.

Most of the people I work with have done what was asked of them. They’ve held things together, shown up for others, followed the rules—and still ended up confused, exhausted, or quietly falling apart.

Some have tried therapy before and found it unhelpful—too clinical, too identity-focused, too quick to apply labels. Others are skeptical but open to seeing what happens if they speak honestly in a room where they’re not being managed.

I don’t work well with clients looking for a polished experience or a fixed outcome. I work best with people who want to think, feel, ask questions, and sit with what doesn’t have an easy answer. If you’re more interested in meaning than performance, this is probably a good fit.

Services & Insurance

Insurance Sessions
53 minutes; cost determined by insurance or by sliding scale. We meet regularly—usually once a week—within the structure required by insurance. You bring what’s present, and we let the work take shape over time. Insurance details will be managed through a third-party billing company; I don’t handle claims or insurance questions directly.

Private-Pay Sessions
90+ minutes; cost determined by sliding scale. No technicalities, no insurance paperwork. Just time to dive deeper and stay with what shows up. These longer sessions can stand alone or be used alongside weekly insurance-based work when more space is needed.

I can provide superbills for private-pay sessions.

I accept Premera, Apple Health (Molina), Regence, Kaiser Permanente, and Cigna.

About

Before I became a therapist, I tried a lot of ways to make sense of the world—math, engineering, monastic life. I followed the rules. I did what I was supposed to. And still, things fell apart. That experience stays with me and shapes the kind of space I offer now.

I use a Jungian, complex-trauma-informed framework. This means I prefer looking at what things are instead of fitting them into the neatest box. I don’t rush to diagnosis or force a solution. Instead, I offer time, attention, and space to let what’s unspoken surface on its own terms.

Through my own therapy, I have found new meaning, connection, peace, and vitality. For my clients, self-trust is the hardest thing to earn, and has the most profound rewards. My path was unique to me: yours will be unique to you. My role is to reflect what you bring into the room with integrity and care. I don’t fix. I explore.

If you’re interested in working together, you can fill out the contact form or message me directly at kai.cone.counseling@gmail.com

We’ll start with a 20-minute consultation, over the phone or in person (preferred). If we move forward, all paperwork will be done in-person during the first session. I’m a bit old-fashioned and prefer to do as little as possible via email.
